Getting to Know Klondike Solitaire

You might know it as Solitaire, Patience, or that card game that came pre-installed on your old computer. Whatever you call it, free Solitaire is the ultimate solo card game. It’s easy to learn but wonderfully addictive.

The game uses a standard 52-card deck—no jokers. The goal? Move all the cards to the four Foundation piles, stacking them by suit from Ace to King. Simple, right? Well, it’s trickier than it seems! To understand Klondike, let's break down the playing field:

How to Play and Move Cards

In the Tableau, the key is alternating colours and building sequences in descending order. Cards must alternate between red and black suits—such as Hearts or Diamonds on Spades or Clubs—to form valid sequences. For example, as you can see in Figure 2 below, you can place the red 7 on the black 8. You can also move entire sequences as long as they follow this rule. Whenever you move a face-up card, the next one flips over—this opens up new moves and helps you progress.

When you can't make any more moves in the Tableau, draw cards from the Stock pile. Depending on the game settings, you may draw one or three cards at a time. But don’t rush—sometimes it’s better to hold off on drawing from the Stock until you've exhausted all possible moves in the Tableau.

Building the Foundations

Once an Ace appears, move it to the Foundation pile. From there, you’ll build in ascending order—2, 3, and so on—until you’ve placed the King of that suit. Keep in mind that only Kings can fill empty spaces in the Tableau, so use these opportunities wisely.
