Getting to Know Freecell
Freecell comes with a unique setup that makes it both challenging and exciting. You’ll work with Free Cells for temporary card storage, a Tableau for building sequences, and Foundations as your ultimate goal. Let’s take a closer look at each! See Image 1 for reference—the numbers match the descriptions below:
- Free Cells: These four open spots in the top left are like your “extra hands.” You can stash cards here temporarily to make other moves possible.
- Tableau: The main action happens here, with eight columns of cards laid out in front of you. Unlike other versions, Freecell’s tableau is all face-up, so you can build sequences while alternating colors (red and black) as you go.
- Foundations: These four piles in the top right are the ultimate destination. Starting with the Aces, you’ll work each suit up to the King.
How to Play Freecell
The goal of Freecell is to move all the cards to the Foundations, stacking each suit from Ace to King. Start by moving any open Aces to the Foundations—they’re the first step in building your suits. Next, work on the tableau by uncovering as many cards as possible. To do this, place cards in alternating colors, like a red 3 on a black 4, as illustrated in Figure 2 below:
If you get stuck, use the free cells to hold cards temporarily. But don’t fill them all too quickly—you’ll need some open spaces to keep making moves. Keeping the free cells clear can make the game much easier.
Quick Tips to Boost Your Freecell Game
Looking to step up your Freecell game? Try these quick strategies:
- Think Ahead: Before making a move, look at the cards and plan a few steps ahead. This helps you avoid getting stuck later.
- Clear Columns When You Can: If you manage to empty a column, it’s a big win. Use it to move cards around more easily, especially higher cards like Kings to start a new stack.
- Use the Undo Button: Not sure if a move will work? No problem—use the undo button to test your ideas and find the best path forward.
