Spider Solitaire got its name from the 8 legs of a spider which match the 8 foundation piles that players must fill to win the game. It's a strategic card game played with two decks of French-suited playing cards. You can choose from three levels of difficulty: 1, 2, or 4 suits, with 4 suits being the hardest to solve. When the game starts, 2 decks of cards are dealt into 10 columns, the first 4 columns have 6 cards each and the last 6 columns have 5 cards. Only the top card of each column is face up, the rest are hidden. Leftover cards go into the stockpile. Here is a breakdown of the items:
- Tableau (1): This is where you spend most of your time strategizing, here you need to arrange the cards in descending order, not worrying about suit.
- Foundations (2): This is your target. Complete a sequence from King to Ace in the same suit and it automatically moves to a foundation area. Clear all the foundations to win the game.
- Stock Pile (3): If you run out of moves, the stock pile offers more cards. Clicking it adds 1 new card to each tableau column.
How Do You Play Spider Solitaire?
Spider Solitaire has 3 difficulty levels. The game on this page starts standard with the beginner-friendly 1-suit level by default. If you want more of a challenge, you can switch levels using the menu in the top right corner or the 3 level buttons. Once you choose a level, the game remembers your choice for next time (thanks to cookies).

Once you’ve picked your level, the fun begins and you are ready to play! The goal in Spider Solitaire is to clear the tableau by organizing all the cards into full sequences (King to Ace) of the same suit and moving them to the foundations. The 1-suit level is straightforward, dealing with just 1 suit. In the 2-suit and 4-suit levels, the objective remains to clear the tableau, but managing multiple suits adds complexity and demands more strategic thinking. Arrange cards in descending order on the tableau, like placing a Queen on a King as shown in Figure 2. You can also move sequences if they have the same suit.
If you run out of moves, you can deal new cards from the stockpile but there is one important rule: you can’t deal cards if there are 1 or more empty columns on the tableau so make sure all columns have at least 1 card before hitting the stockpile!

Tips to Improve Your Spider Solitaire Skills
Spider Solitaire is all about planning and patience. Want to get better and win more games? Here are some simple tips to help you:
- Use the Undo Button: With the undo function you can fix mistakes and it lets you test different moves helping you find the best strategy.
- Empty Columns: Clear tableau columns early to make space for moving cards and uncovering hidden ones. You can place any card or sequence in an empty column, giving you more options to organize your moves.
- Use the Stockpile Wisely: Only deal from the stockpile when you have no other moves. Make all possible moves on the tableau first to keep things organized.
